What Exactly is “The Internet of Things?”

“The Internet of Things” is something that many people have been talking about recently, but not many are sure of what it is exactly. Many believe that it is a very important topic and that it can have a huge impact on all of our lives.

So what is IoT exactly?

It is a concept that involves connection of any device to the Internet with one switch. This does not just include phones and tablets, it includes regular household appliances like stoves and microwaves as well. It includes just about any kind of device that you can think of. It also applies to devices such as car engines and other components of a machine. So it is a very wide range concept.

Once firm of analysts in particular, Gartner, recently made a claim that by 2020, there will be over 26 million connected devices in the world, and some even believe that the figure will be closer to 100 million. The IoT is then, essentially, a giant network of connected devices and things. So it will entail connections between people and things, people and people, and also things and things.

So what will the impact of such an idea be?

In theory, it can affect just about every aspect of your life. What if you are driving and there is a lot of traffic on the road. You are going to be late for a meeting. In the theory of the IoT, you will not have to send a text message to a person to notify them. Instead, for example, your GPS system will be able to understand that you are not going to make it in time because of the traffic, and the system can send the notification instead of you. That is just one example and there are millions more when it comes to looking at potential scenarios related to the IoT.

It is hard to tell what the future will look like in such a scenario, but as more devices begin to connect with the Internet, it will be seen in time how it will shape our society. But in the meanwhile, it is an interesting concept to consider and talk about.
