Technology themes have plagued nightmares for decades, helped along in part by Hollywood portrayals of murderous robots, stolen war machines, and AI that wants to wipe out the planet. In reality, things are much less dire and even the scariest sounding tech has a positive impact.
Unmanned aircraft have many uses that aren’t as nefarious as spying and war. If Amazon’s plan to deliver packages via drone in the next few years bears fruit, the hum of an approaching aircraft will spark delight and curiosity rather than fear.
Aircrafts with no pilot on board can be either remote controlled by a pilot on ground or be pre-programmed on on-board computers. Although they are associated with armed attacks, drones can be utilized for various other purposes. For example, universities are authorized to use them.
Firstly, drones are used in research that would allow various technologies to work in coordination “The research has been going on for a long time,” said Lora Weiss, technical director for autonomous systems for the Georgia Tech Research Institute. Other universities use them in order to observe and survey various fields of study, as well as to surveil campus events that attract a large number of students.
The University of Colorado is flying drones into thunderstorms in order to track their development into tornadoes. Others are using them to monitor wildfires. Without risking human lives, unmanned aircrafts are perfect for hunting hurricanes. “Our vehicles don’t fight the hurricane; we use the hurricane to take us places,” said Kamran Mohseni from the university of Florida.
Basically, if something is too dangerous or difficult for people to do, drones can step in. This way, much will be achieved without endangering humans. ‘The unmanned aircraft is a tool to do the dull, dirty and dangerous – it is not there per se to be Big Brother,’ said Ben Trapnell, the associate professor of aeronautics at the University of North Dakota.
It is understandable that people are concerned with all innovative technology, but once all the benefits of unmanned aircrafts come to light, the public will surely relax.
